Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy

Honoring a pioneer in medicine and social reform

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy (1886-1968) was a trailblazer in Indian medicine and women's rights. She was the first woman to study medicine in India, the first woman House Surgeon in Government Maternity Hospital, Madras, and the first woman legislator in India.

Throughout her life, she championed women's education, healthcare access, and social reform. Her establishment of the Avvai Home for destitute women and the Cancer Institute in Chennai showcased her commitment to serving society's most vulnerable.
